Ella "Kawahine" Tokunaga wants to live in a world where face-to-face greetings are more prized than texting, emails are short, and "introspective" coffee conversations are long.

Known to many as "Kawahine," she is an artist, educator, Hawaiian values trainer and cultural practitioner. When Kawahine teaches or creates things, she does so with dual noesis, having been both classically trained in Western Art and culturally certified in Hawaiian arts and cultural practices – highly trained with a master’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Hawai‘i-Mānoa and a bachelor’s degree from the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Commercial Arts.  Kawahine melds her innate gift of creativity with skills she developed from her Hawaiian cultural roots.  Her passion is known to inspire others in the field of Education and to those who engage with her in a healthy attitude of inquiry and desire to acquire habits of success for positive living.

Kawahine is valued as a Cultural Curriculum Developer with 15+ years’ experience with the State Department of Education Hawaiian Studies and Art Instructor at the University of Hawai‘i Outreach College.  She has presented at the Statewide Department of Education Social Studies Teachers’ Conference as well as District-wide Kupuna training workshops for professional development and project-based lessons.

Kawahine continually pursues the expansion of her own diverse skills to create, collaborate, and deliver curriculums that are customized for each client/student. She brings to her workshops, a weaving of Hawaiian and local cultural histories that are made relevant through life “wisdoms” imbued in her students through “talk story.” Kawahine likes to challenge each of her students to identify and undertake actions that resonate with Aloha. As a seasoned cultural practitioner of the Hawaiian Arts, Kawahine presents information and fosters skills that appeal to people of varying learning styles, particularly through kinesthetic and visual exercises.

Currently, Kawahine is an instructor with the GLAD (Global Learning and Development) program at Kapiolani Community College and develops customized, cultural-based workshops for educators at Leeward Community College.

ella4art LLC is her entrepreneurial arm that melds traditional cultural arts into contemporary arts fashion and decor.
